THE MOVIES, edited by Martin Scorsese, The Modern Library.

The Modern Library has launched a new series called The Movies with four volumes selected by noted director Martin Scorsese, the series’ editor. The Art of the Motion Picture by poet Vachel Lindsay was originally published in 1915; this is the 1922 revised edition. Memo from David O. Selznick is a collection of the producer’s famously detailed memoranda about his films, most famously Gone With the Wind. Agee on Film is a collection of James Agee’s writings on the movies, including reviews from Time and the Nation. Agee, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his novel A Death in the Family, also wrote the screenplays for The African Queen and Night of the Hunter. The fourth volume in the series is the only one that’s not a re-issue–The Making of 2001: A Space Odyssey is a new collection of previously published work about Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking 1968 film. Although these four volumes focus on American movies, in his series introduction, Scorsese promises that future books will include more about foreign films.
